Fertility
Fertility and the Whole Person
Fertility is often seen as a health condition to be investigated, diagnosed, and treated in isolation. And while medical investigation and intervention have an important role to play, there is something missing with this perspective.
Fertility is the expression of a body in balance — a body that feels safe, nourished, and supported enough to bring new life into the world. When experiencing challenges with conception, it is rarely because of a single factor. More often, it is the cumulative effect of multiple things — hormonal imbalance, nutritional depletion, chronic stress, inflammatory burden, or underlying conditions.
An integrative approach to fertility begins by asking not just "why isn't conception happening" but "what do I need to do in order to thrive?"
Supporting Your Body's Natural Capacity
The body inherently knows how to create and sustain life. The role of integrative fertility support is to understand what your body needs and to support it in meeting those needs as fully as possible.
For some women, that means nourishing nutritional foundations, optimizing sleep and stress, and supporting a healthy cycle before trying to conceive. For others, it means investigating and addressing underlying hormonal, metabolic, or immune imbalances. And for women working alongside a fertility clinic or considering assisted reproductive technology, it means working together as a broader team to provide integrative support that complements and strengthens the broader treatment plan.
Whatever your starting point, the approach is the same — listening to what your body is communicating, working with its rhythms, and supporting it to do what it has been designed to do.
A note on male factor infertility: it is important to acknowledge that while the weight of the fertility journey tends to fall disproportionately on women, male factor causes account for approximately 30% of fertility challenges (with a remaining 30% resulting from female causes and 30% resulting from unknown causes in unexplained infertility). Optimizing sperm quality is just as important in your fertility journey.
How Conventional Medicine Typically Approaches Fertility
Conventional fertility medicine is investigation-focused and, when treatment is indicated, intervention-focused — often moving through a stepped pathway from ovulation induction to intrauterine insemination (IUI) to in vitro fertilization (IVF). These tools can be valuable and have helped many women conceive who otherwise could not have.
However, conventional fertility medicine tends to work around the body's limitations rather than addressing their underlying causes. A woman with PMOS may be given medication to induce ovulation without addressing the insulin resistance driving her hormonal imbalance. A woman with recurrent miscarriage may be told to "keep trying" without investigation of the immune or nutritional factors that may be contributing.
An integrative approach does not replace conventional fertility medicine — it works alongside it.
An Integrative Approach to Fertility Support
An integrative approach to fertility begins with a comprehensive assessment of your hormonal, metabolic, nutritional, immune, and overall health — alongside a thorough review of your menstrual cycle, health history, and the broader context of your life.
Every care plan is different, personalized to every women’s specific health picture. Treatment may draw on nutritional optimization, lifestyle and stress support, targeted supplementation, botanical medicine, hormonal support, and prescription care where appropriate. Where an underlying condition such as PMOS or endometriosis is contributing to fertility challenges, addressing that condition is central to the fertility care plan.
Throughout your fertility journey, we always look at the whole person, address root causes, and aim to build the strongest possible foundation for conception and a healthy pregnancy.
Preconception Care
If you are planning to conceive, beginning integrative preconception care three to six months before trying is ideal. This window aligns with the maturation cycle of eggs — meaning that the nutritional and lifestyle changes you make today will impact on the eggs that will be available for conception in the coming months.
Preconception care is not only about optimizing fertility. It is about setting the foundations for feeling vibrant in your day to day life and preparing for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Fertility Support and Emotional Wellbeing
The fertility journey — whether you are preparing or navigating challenges — can bring on an array of emotions. Where it supports your healing, psychotherapeutic support is woven into your sessions — creating space to navigate not just the physical, but also the mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of this chapter.
